Lima's coast is overcast and drizzly from June to November (the garúa season — a low marine cloud layer that rarely produces actual rain). December to April brings sunshine and warmer temperatures (22–26°C) — the best time for Lima's beaches and coastal dining.
For travel within Peru, timing depends on the Andes. May to October (dry season) is the best time for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail — clear skies and excellent hiking conditions. The Inca Trail closes entirely in February for maintenance. November to April is wet season in the Andes — Machu Picchu remains accessible but cloud is frequent.

Lima's upmarket clifftop district overlooking the Pacific is the main tourist hub — excellent restaurants, good accommodation options, the Larcomar shopping centre built into the cliff face, and the Parque Kennedy neighbourhood with its famous cats. The Malecón clifftop walkway has excellent ocean views and is one of Lima's best sunset spots.
The bohemian artist's quarter adjacent to Miraflores — colourful colonial architecture, the famous Bridge of Sighs, Peru's best concentration of art galleries, and Lima's finest restaurant and bar scene. Barranco is where serious food travellers spend their evenings.
Virgilio Martínez's Central has been rated the world's best restaurant and remains one of the world's most extraordinary dining experiences — each course represents a different Peruvian ecosystem and altitude. Book months in advance. For a more accessible taste of the same philosophy, Kjolle (his sister's adjacent restaurant) is also outstanding.
One of the world's great pre-Columbian collections — 45,000 objects spanning 4,000 years of Peruvian civilisation, beautifully presented in a colonial mansion in Pueblo Libre. The storage gallery (visible to visitors) has an extraordinary sense of overwhelming abundance.
Lima's national dish is best eaten at lunch — the traditional Peruvian rule is that ceviche is a daytime food. La Mar (Gastón Acurio's accessible cevichería in Miraflores) and the market cevicherías in Surquillo are both outstanding at very different price points.

Lima requires more situational awareness than some Latin American cities — use Uber rather than street taxis, keep your phone out of sight in public, and stick to Miraflores and Barranco for most activities. The historic centre (Centro Histórico) is worth visiting by day with a tour but requires care. Altitude sickness is not a factor in Lima (it's at sea level) but will affect you in Cusco (3,400m) and Lake Titicaca (3,812m) — allow acclimatisation time. The Australian Government rates Peru as "exercise a high degree of caution."
Day 1: Miraflores arrival, Malecón sunset walk, dinner in Barranco.
Day 2: Larco Museum morning, Miraflores market ceviche lunch, Barranco afternoon gallery walk, evening at one of Lima's top restaurants.

Day 4: Flight to Cusco — acclimatise, gentle walk, coca tea.
Extension: Sacred Valley (2 days), Machu Picchu (1–2 days), return to Lima for departure.
